UN Human Rights Council – Universal Periodic Review Session

United Nations Human Rights Council

United Nations Office at Geneva, Switzerland

2025

Representatives of the International Federation for Sustainability and Justice (IFSJ) attended a formal session of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) at the United Nations Office at Geneva, one of the United Nations’ most central and institutional human rights forums.

The Universal Periodic Review is the only global mechanism under which all UN Member States are periodically examined on their human rights obligations and commitments. The session attended by IFSJ concerned the review of São Tomé and Príncipe and took place in the Assembly Hall of the Palais des Nations, alongside government delegations, UN bodies, and accredited organizations.

For IFSJ, presence at the UPR session was not symbolic, but substantive. Attendance provided first-hand insight into the functioning of a core UN accountability mechanism and into the dynamics through which international scrutiny, diplomatic dialogue, and institutional oversight intersect within the United Nations system.

Participation in such proceedings reflects IFSJ’s ongoing engagement with high-level UN processes and its commitment to maintaining informed, direct exposure to the mechanisms shaping international governance, justice, and institutional responsibility.
